Khedira all but signed, fee still to be agreed with Real.

Arsenal are closing in on the signing of Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira, who has reportedly agreed to join the club on a £150,000 per week contract, making him the Gunners’ highest earner.

The German international will take the number 5 shirt left vacant by former Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen, who left the club for Barcelona in the summer.

The 27-year-old was linked with Arsenal on several occasions during the summer transfer window after refusing to renew his deal at the Bernabeu, and it now looks as though he will leave the club in January as the two sides just iron out the details of his transfer fee.

Real have been keen to offload the player on a cut-price deal to avoid losing him for free next season, and it is expected that the World Cup winner will cost somewhere in the region of £9.5m, with Arsenal desperate to sign a new defensive midfielder as soon as possible.

Although it was expected that clubs would wait until next summer to sign Khedira on a free transfer, Arsene Wenger’s recent injury crisis in midfield has pushed him to make this signing early, and the deal could be close to confirmation after the player agreed personal terms on a move to the Emirates Stadium.
