United beat the Toffees 2-1 with goals from summer signings Angel Di Maria and Radamel Falcao while goalkeeper David De Gea put in a world class performance, making three superb stops including one from a Leighton Baines penalty.

Although the Dutchman was happy with the victory on Sunday afternoon, he wants to see his team play better for longer periods.

Speaking after the game, the Dutch boss said: “We are not playing well but we are fourth in the table – so what will happen when we do play well?

“We have played very good for 45 minutes, and sometimes 50 or 60, but we have to do it for 90 minutes.

“But that needs time. I’m sorry to say it again. But you have seen it today.”

The Red Devils will take on West Bromwich Albion in their next game, which takes place after the international break.

Van Gaal will then face his two toughest tests as United boss so far when he faces Premier League leaders Chelsea at Old Trafford followed by a clash against rivals Manchester City at the Etihad.
