New Red Devils manager Louis van Gaal needs defensive recruitment desperately, having had to call upon unproven youngsters Tyler Blackett, Michael Keane and Paddy McNair already this season.

There are also growing doubts over more experienced figures such as Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling and it’s widely believed at least one new defender will be signed by United in the January transfer window.

Vlaar knows van Gaal well having worked under the 63-year-old for two years when he was in charge of the Netherlands national team and the Villa skipper impressed for the Dutchman at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil this summer.

Since returning from that tournament the 29-year-old has been unsure about his commitment to Paul Lambert’s side and has been considering a move away from Birmingham.

Lambert has tried to tempt the defensive ace to stay at Villa Park with the lure of a new contract, but negotiations concerning that have hit a standstill and it now looks increasingly likely that Vlaar will leave his current club.
