After a cagey, if lively, opening Angel di Maria fired Man United into the lead just before the half-hour after being provided with a nicely weighted assist from Juan Mata, in for suspended forward Wayne Rooney.

On the stroke of half-time Luke Shaw was adjudged to have brought down Tony Hibbert but Leighton Baines saw his spot-kick saved by the superb David de Gea.

Ten minutes into the second half Steven Naismith had leveled with a headed finish after Man United’s defence had once again failed to deal with a well delivered ball into the box, a common failing this season.

Just five minutes later Colombian Radamel Falcao had scored his first goal for Man United, the loaned in AS Monaco man lethally finishing following an Angel di Maria cross/shot.

David de Gea pulled off a save of the season contender in injury time to help Man United to collect all three points, the Spaniard saving brilliantly from Bryan Oviedo’s long range effort.
