David Luiz turned down a contract extension in the summer offered to him by Chelsea in favour of a blockbuster move to PSG, the Daily Mail reports.

The Brazilian centre-back who suffered World Cup heartache during the summer eventually sealed a mammoth £50m transfer to the Ligue 1 champions, making him the world’s most expensive ever defender.

David Luiz couldn’t get into Chelsea’s team last season, and Blues supporters were delighted that they managed to get such an enormous fee for his services as a result.

It turns out though that the Blues tried to keep him, and only decided to part ways when the 27-year-old told them he wanted to sign for PSG.

“Chelsea offered me a new contract to stay but it was my choice to come here. I was happy with the plan PSG offered to me and I think it was exactly the right moment to move,” claimed the likeable stopper.

“I was so happy at Chelsea, I won two European titles and the FA Cup, it was great for me.

“I’m a lucky guy. I was playing for a big club like Chelsea and now I’ve got another opportunity to play for another big club. I’m enjoying it here.”

David Luiz has started this season in good form, which has surprised many who thought he would struggle to come back following his World Cup nightmare.

During the semi-final, David Luiz put in a truly appalling display, as the home nation lost 7-1 to Germany, the eventual champions.
