The German international, who has been one of the top defensive midfield players in the world in recent years, has snubbed the advances of his old manager Jose Mourinho after making the decision to quit the Bernabeu this January.

The 27-year-old is now understood to have agreed a move to the Emirates Stadium this season, with the two clubs still to finalise a fee for him to make the switch to north London.

However, he could have been going to Arsenal’s rivals Chelsea if things had worked out differently, though he will instead become the latest big name to join the Gunners in recent times.

Mesut Ozil also made the move from Real Madrid to Arsenal last summer, while other high-profile signings such as Alexis Sanchez and Danny Welbeck were made this year.

Arsene Wenger is still in need of commanding players in midfield, however, and Khedira has long been the Frenchman’s top target to come in in that position.
