The former Atletico Madrid front man netted United’s winner in their 2-1 victory over Everton on Sunday afternoon, a result that lifted van Gaal’s side into the Premier League’s top four.

The former Barcelona boss was delighted with Falcao’s contribution and hopes that his goal will be the first of many at Old Trafford this season.

“[Falcao] needed that,” said the veteran Dutch coach.

“He was forcing himself too much to score. Now he has, it’ll be better after the international break.”

Despite a shaky start to the season, United have already moved above rivals Liverpool and Arsenal and currently sit fourth in the Premier League table.

After the international break, the Red Devils travel to the Hawthorns for a match against West Bromwich Albion.

Following that, Van Gaal will face his two toughest tests since becoming United manager when he takes on Chelsea at Old Trafford and then brings his new look side to the Etihad for a match against bitter rivals Manchester City.
