Currently 11th in the German top division, Schalke are just three points above the relegation zone and have looked remarkably poor domestically this season.

Di Matteo guided Chelsea to Champions League success in 2012 during a brief spell in charge of the London club. He was dismissed the following season however, not even making it to Christmas before getting the axe.

Schalke and Chelsea are now in the same Champions League group, the pair playing out a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge in their first meeting. It could be an emotional return for the Italian manager when the two sides meet again in November, as not only did he manage the Blues for a short time, he enjoyed six excellent years playing at the club.

Due to the fact that Jens Keller led Schalke into the Champions League in each of his two seasons in charge, he may feel his dismissal was a little unfair. Their 2-1 loss against Hoffenheim at the weekend proved to be one too many though, and the club had no choice but to let him go.
