The 30 year old is into the final year of his current contract and is seemingly concerned about his long term prospects, not least as loaned in Spaniard Javier Manquillo now appears to be Brendan Rodgers’ first choice at right-back with Alberto Moreno battling Jose Enrique for the left-back berth.

Johnson has apparently been offered a one year contract extension to his £120k a week deal but has opted to not put pen to paper though his comments on the subject of a new deal would appear to suggest his situation is indeed very fluid.

“I am just concentrating week by week and not thinking about it. Of course I want to stay but, like I say, I worry about this week, this week, and then next week, next week. That is how I live my life.”

One wonders why Johnson is worried about the situation if indeed a contract extension has been offered though perhaps the former West Ham and Chelsea man is looking for a longer term deal.

It seems only fitting that a player who could be fighting for a spot in Liverpool’s starting eleven, and a high earner at that, would only be offered a short term contract.

Johnson is free to agree a pre-contract deal with a foreign side in January and can leave on a free transfer next summer.
