The Swedish international has been successful at a wide range of different clubs from Barcelona to Inter Milan but he could have scored all those goals in an Arsenal shirt, with Wenger inviting him to his office when he was a 20-year-old playing at FC Malmo in his homeland.

Although the Frenchman believes he was close to signing the devastating hit-man, Ibrahimovic claims the move was unlikely to happen.

“Today, Wenger says it was a misunderstanding. But I didn’t like being asked to prove myself,” explained Ibrahimovic.

“I know I’m good enough. I don’t need to show it to you. Either you know who I am or you don’t. I remember being in Wenger’s office and you could tell he was the boss. It was Wenger! But I don’t think I was so close [to signing]. I went to Ajax the next day.”

Since rejecting Wenger’s offer of a trial, Ibrahimovic has become one of the most deadly strikers on the planet and has won silverware at almost every club he has played for.
