The 20-year-old sustained the injury in the Toffees 2-1 defeat to Manchester United at the weekend and it is expected that he will be out of action for around three months.

The long lay-off will be a big blow to Stones, who was named in England’s squad to face San Marino and Estonia this week before he suffered the injury, and will no doubt hit Everton and England hard too.

The Toffees are also without star youngster Ross Barkley through a long-term injury at the moment, with Roberto Martinez’s side enduring a tough start to the season.
