Croatia are set to take on Bulgaria on Friday in Sofia before a meeting with Azerbaijan on October 13 in Osijek, but Lovren has been sent home early through a suspected abdominal injury.

Lovren felt the pain in his abdomen muscles and the medical exams confirmed that he will not be ready to feature for his country in the two matches.

Coach Niko Kova? has since called up Panathinaikos FC defender Gordon Schildenfeld as a replacement.

The news will come as a blow to Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers, though, who has had to deal with some defensive issues of his own this season.

However, it is unknown how long the £20m summer signing is expected to be out for, but if he is unavailable for a game on the 13th then it is unlikely that he will be ready for their clash the following weekend.
