The 22 year old Sporting Lisbon defensive midfielder has been a much sought after performer after a strong showing over the past 18 months, during which he helped his side secure a runners-up spot in the Primeira Liga as well as a spot in Paulo Bento’s 2014 World Cup squad.

Carvalho has confirmed he is happy at Sporting but his comments about a potential move away from the Portuguese capital would leave many expecting a possible departure sooner rather than later.

“I would not say I was disappointed [to stay], but despite being very happy at Sporting, we all have ambitions and I hope one day to be playing in the best leagues in the world, the English or Spanish,”

“It did not happen this year, but if I continue to do my job as I have been doing for sure that sooner or later it will happen.

“I understand the proposals, but I think that there was no value for the clause and therefore they have been refused.”

These are very honest claims and ones that may well lead to Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger to make his interest well known, with Carvalho perhaps the ideal man to bring in to help add some much needed steel to his Arsenal midfield.

Veteran skipper Mikel Arteta is very much a square peg in a round hole, the Spaniard being used in a holding role that very much compromises his attacking qualities. Carvalho would provide the north London side with an out and out enforcer to help offer protection to their defence as well as the club’s creative midfield talents.
