Outrageous claim from former Holland manager…
Granted, Arjen Robben (despite his well-publicised theatrics) is a brilliant footballer, but he’s not the best in the world, is he…?
Former Netherlands manager Bert van Marwijk has claimed that the Bayern Munich winger is a better player than both Lionel Messi and current World Player of the Year Cristiano Ronaldo, Goal reports.
Robben has excelled for both club and country during 2014, and he was arguably the most impressive of the three during this summer’s World Cup, but few believe him to be superior than the goal crazy phenomenons playing in Spain.
“If I’m a coach and I could choose Messi, Ronaldo or Robben, I’d choose Robben,” van Marwijk told AD.
“Out of the three players, he’s the most complete. Robben ahead of Ronaldo and Messi in that regard but not everyone sees that. The focus is on goals and attacking.
“I get the idea that this is the thinking for individual prizes like the Ballon d’Or.”
This term, although Robben’s been in typically form, his performances have undoubtedly been eclipsed by Messi and Ronaldo.
The Barcelona star, and four-time Ballon D’or winner has scored and assisted six goals apiece in La Liga so far, while Real Madrid’s Ronaldo has bagged a jaw-dropping 15 goals in just eight starts this term.
Bayern’s 30-year-old on the other hand has registered a far more modest three goals and two assists so far, but van Marwijk would still have him over Messi and Ronaldo.
