The Australian arrived at Stamford Bridge from Fulham in 2013, but as the Daily Mail explains, the veteran stopper has only made four appearances for the Blues, and has not even been making the bench so far this season.

The source confirms that the Cottagers have enquired about taking the 42-year-old on an emergency loan until the end of the season but Jose Mourinho has rejected the bid.

It appears that the Blues boss is still concerned over the future of current number two Cech, who recently spoke of having ‘no time’ to sit on the bench if he wants to keep his place in the national team.

If the Czech international chooses to depart the club in January, as has regularly been rumoured, then Mourinho needs to keep Schwarzer as back-up to Courtois – who had to be replaced against Arsenal in the Blues last Premier League fixture after picking up a head injury.
