Old Trafford side ready to dig deep to land three top talents.

Perhaps unsurprisingly two of those on the Man United radar are defensive acquisitions, with van Gaal keen to strengthen his leaky back-line with moves for Borussia Dortmund centre-back Mats Hummels and Everton right-back Seamus Coleman.

Van Gaal has his sights firmly set on German World Cup winner Hummels and though Jurgen Klopp’s side will fight tooth and nail to keep hold of the 25 year old the Man United manager is confident he can tempt the centre-back into leaving the Westfalenstadion and will offer as much as £35m for the former Bayern Munich man.

Hummels won back to back Bundesliga titles in the early stages of his Dortmund career but has seen his side fall a country mile behind domestic rivals Bayern Munich and could feel the time is right for a fresh challenge.

Despite decent recent displays from Brazilian Rafael van Gaal is also very keen on bringing in Republic of Ireland international Coleman to fill his right-sided defensive berth.

Everton paid just £60k to sign Coleman and as such Man United feel an offer of £16m would prove tough for Toffees chairman Bill Kenwright to ignore and with Roberto Martinez’s side currently sitting near the foot of the Premier League table the attack minded full-back may be open to a Goodison Park exit.

Finally Man United will step-up their pursuit of AS Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman, with van Gaal keen to bring in his fellow countryman to field in the centre of his side.

The 24 year old is close to recovering from a long term knee injury and providing the former PSV Eindhoven man proves his full fitness Man United are willing to offer £30m for the Stadio Olimpico star.

Such is the importance of Man United’s pursuit of a top four finish that the club’s owners are set to back van Gaal’s transfer plans to the hilt.

Van Gaal will look to balance the books by finding buyers for Ashley Young, Marouane Fellaini and Anderson in January with loaned out trio Javier Hernandez, Nani and Tom Cleverley likely to be sold outright next summer.
