Manchester United’s big money signing could have gone elsewhere…
Manchester United’s record signing Angel di Maria came close to joining AS Monaco, before moving to Old Trafford from Real Madrid in the summer transfer window.
Reports in the Daily Mail suggest that the Argentine winger had agreed a switch to the French giants, only to see it collapse due to the club’s financial issues – allowing United to swoop.
Paris Saint Germain also pulled out of a move for Di Maria, after the impact of Financial Fair Play regulations had on their budget. The £60m man has since been a huge success in the Premier League, scoring three goals in his first five games.
The 26-year-old played almost 200 times for Madrid during four years in Spain. He was an integral part of the team that won the Champions League last season – winning the man of the match award in the final – while he has also won La Liga and two Copa del Rey’s.
The former Benfica man departed the club last summer, making way for Colombian World Cup star James Rodriguez, who arrived from Monaco.
