The Gunners midfielder received the Man of the Match award not only for the match against Estonia on Sunday, but also against San Marino on Thursday.

Against Estonia in particular he was constantly active, and put a number of excellent chances on a plate for England captain Wayne Rooney in particular.

His injury record over the last couple of seasons has stunted his growth as a footballer somewhat, but he is clearly a player with massive potential and was once, and arguably still is by many, viewed as the future of English football.

Martin Keown is definitely of that opinion, and he believes that the 22-year-old is the perfect player to be deployed in the holding role at the base of England’s diamond.

“There was a lot of rotation in the midfield diamond, but Jack Wilshere needs to become the main man in the holding role,” Keown wrote in his Daily Mail column.

“Jack is our most technically gifted player so it makes sense for him to play there [in the holding role].”

Many believe Wilshere is wasted in the holding role, and he requires the freedom to get forward when he wants. But with the lack of a real defensive minded midfielder the Arsenal youngster may be the best option England have.
