Long term Manchester United and Manchester City target breaks hearts in Manchester after signing new contract with his current La Liga club…

Athletic Bilbao midfielder Oscar de Marcos has crushed any hopes that Manchester United and Manchester City had of signing him after penning a new deal with the La Liga club, according to TalkSport.

The 25-year-old was reportedly a long term target for Manchester United who came close to signing him back in 2012. Manchester City have also shown an interest in him on numerous occasions, although nothing concrete ever came of it.

It doesn’t look like the Spaniard will be making the switch to the Premier League any time soon however, his latest deal keeping him at the San Mames stadium until 2019.

The midfielder also has a massive £31.5m release clause in his contract, which ensures that if he were to push through a move then the Basque club will get a premium for him.

“I have said many times that I really wanted to go on and the club knew that,” de Marcos told the club’s official website.

“It was easy, it’s important to be here as long as they want.”

The versatile midfielder could have been an ideal signing for United, as he not only plays in a number of positions in midfield, but is also an accomplished right-back. He may have fitted in with Louis van Gaal’s wing-back system perfectly, but we may never get to see him in England now.
