The 26-year-old has been linked with a move to a bigger club on several occasions, with United among his main admirers from the Premier League, but they may now struggle to sign the Argentine as he looks likely to commit his future to the Portuguese giants.

Benfica will tie Gaitan down to a new deal lasting until 2018, making him one of the most high paid players in Portugal, leaving United and other European giants to look elsewhere for new signings in the attacking midfield department.

United have been keen to strengthen in that area for some time, despite bringing in the likes of Angel Di Maria this summer, with Louis van Gaal plotting more big-name additions.

Fiorentina winger Juan Cuadrado is one who has regularly been linked with a move to United, and he may now be the club’s most realistic target for the January transfer window if the Red Devils continue to chase players of that kind.

Monaco, meanwhile, lost James Rodriguez to Real Madrid in the summer and could do with a replacement.
