Only Manchester United and Barcelona had a higher summer spend than Arsenal, with the Gunners recruiting Alexis Sanchez, Danny Welbeck, Calum Chambers, Mathieu Debuchy and David Ospina for £84 million.

However, the overriding feeling at the Emirates is that despite spending all that money he was shortsighted in not replacing Thomas Vermaelen and starting the season with just two recognised centre-backs.
