The principality side are confident they can lure the England man away from Old Trafford and are likely to have little issue in meeting the player’s current £300k a week salary.

AS Monaco vice president Vadim Vasilyev has publicly stated his interest in the 28 year old;

“One year ago, we were discussing one of the top players in the Premier League, a top English player.

“But it was on the table. This opportunity finally did not happen, but I think one day that it will come, that it will happen.”

Indeed AS Monaco will demand Rooney as part of a swap deal if Louis van Gaal wishes to make the temporary signing of Colombian Radamel Falcao a permanent one.

That may just be the type of deal that van Gaal considers though it’s worth remembering that the Dutch boss did make Rooney his club captain and as such clearly has faith in the former Everton man.

Rooney has had a mixed season at Man United thus far, netting three goals in six matches and garnering a fairly silly red card for his kick on West Ham winger Stewart Downing.

Van Gaal may feel that former Atletico Madrid and FC Porto man Falcao could be a player worth sacrificing Rooney for.
