The forward’s fine form for Real Sociedad last season not only landed him a place in France’s World Cup squad but also sparked the interest of several top clubs, including the Gunners and Paris St Germain.

However, despite the Premier League club approaching him over a move to the Emirates, he decided to stay in Spain and move to the Vicente Calderon, a decision he certainly doesn’t regret.

“Why Spain and not elsewhere? This is my championship, my home. I’m happy here and Atletico is a great club. The [champions] were willing to pay €30 million [£23.8m] for me,” he told France Football.

“I had the boss on the phone. He motivated me and said the club really wanted me. I knew that I was coming here to learn.

“Was it weird when PSG and Arsenal were also interested? [Atletico are] still the champions of Spain!

“I needed a club like that and a coach like Diego Simeone to progress. I always demands intensity in training. That’s my style and I like it.”

Arsenal ended up signing another La Liga import during the summer, Alexis Sanchez from Barcelona.

The Chilean has had a mixed start to life with the FA Cup winners, scoring a wonder goal against Premier League champions Manchester City but struggling against the likes of Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund.
