The Real Madrid boss has also backed James Rodriguez to be a top player for the club.

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has blasted former player Angel Di Maria, claiming the winger wanted too much money and had to be sold because the club couldn’t afford his wage demands, Goal.com reports.

The Argentine international played a huge role in Los Blancos Champions League victory last season and several pundits have already suggested that Real are missing the 26-year-old following his £59.7 million move to Manchester United.

However, Ancelotti insists that the club had no choice but to cash in on Di Maria.

“Di Maria demanded a lot of money and preferred to leave in order to earn more elsewhere. The club simply couldn’t give him the money he wanted,” Ancelotti told Cadena Cope.

“There are times when a club has to say no. You cannot change the club’s policy for just one player.”

The winger’s place in Real Madrid’s first team was taken by James Rodriguez, who joined the Spanish giants for £63 million following some stellar performances for Colombia at this summer’s World Cup.

Rodriguez performances for Real so far this season have been mixed but Ancelotti is backing the 23-year-old to live up to his hefty price tag and rejects suggestions he is being forced to play the attacking midfielder by the club’s hierarchy.

“James is worth the money. When you pay £63m, it’s because you think a player is worth it,” he said.

“If the president told me to play someone, I’d step down right away…”
