Van Gaal spent upwards of £150m on new additions over the summer but is set for a further injection of transfer funds as the Old Trafford side’s owners seek to secure a coveted Champions League berth for next term.

Attacking midfielder Draxler is rightly considered one of the hottest prospects in European football and is known to be a long term target for Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger but van Gaal is confident he can lure the German international to join his side in January.

It will take a hefty bid of £37m to reach Draxler’s buyout clause but such is his reputation that many sides are willing to meet the asking price to snap up the wonderkid.

Draxler already has already made more than 150 appearances for Schalke and has 15 national team caps to his name, this despite only turning 21 years of age last month.

Man United had scouts present at Stamford Bridge as Schalke secured an impressive draw against Chelsea, with Draxler putting in a superb individual display.

Moves to capture Draxler come as Louis van Gaal seeks to conduct a major midfield clear-out with the Dutch manager keen to find permanent buyers for loaned out trio Nani, Tom Cleverley and Wilfried Zaha whilst the likes of Darren Fletcher, Marouane Fellaini, Ashley Young and Anderson are all playing for their Man United futures.
