Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal spent over £150 million on new players during the summer, bringing in attacking talents like Angel di Maria and Radamel Falcao.

However, he only signed two defenders and failed to adequately replace Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra, who all left to leave a lack of experience in United’s defence.

O’Shea believes United have struggled with injuries so far this season, but will improve once van Gaal can establish a regular back four.

Asked if their problems at the back so far this season will affect their hopes, the Republic of Ireland international was quoted by talkSPORT: “No I don’t think so.

“I think they’ve just been very unfortunate with injures, and consistency for a back-four is very important.

“If Jonny Evans stays fit he’ll be crucial for them, he’s a very good player, he talks and organises the defence.

“A lot of people have been talking about the team’s experience as well, and with losing Rio, Vida and Patrice it was always going to be tough for them this season.

“But it isn’t a question of personnel, I think they have the players there to get to the top four, without a doubt, so once they get their defence sorted I sure they’ll be fine.”
