Manchester City could go within two points of Premier League leaders Chelsea on Saturday lunchtime, if only for a few hours. Their visitors at the Etihad Stadium, Tottenham Hotspur, will be looking to move into the Champions League places.
It’s been a mixed start to the season for the division’s defending champions, who have taken 14 points from their opening seven games. They’ve won their last two league games, but could have one eye on their crucial mid-week Champions League game with CSKA Moscow.
Tottenham have struggled of late, although they did end a run of four games without a win in their last league match, a creditable 1-0 win over Southampton. A win today would take them briefly into third place before the 3pm kick-off’s.
In team news, City defender Eliaquim Mangala is set to miss out with a thigh injury. Midfielder Yaya Toure returned to Manchester on Thursday, a day early from Ivory Coast duty, but if he is tired, Frank Lampard could start.
Spurs have doubts over Hugo Lloris and Nacer Chadli after both returned from international duty with injuries. Kyle Naughton is out with an ankle problem, while Emmanuel Adebayor and Nabil Bentaleb need to be assessed.
Man City have won six of their last seven league meetings with Tottenham. Spurs lost 6-0 on their last trip to the Etihad Stadium in November 2013. That is their joint heaviest defeat in the Premier League. The last six Premier League games between these sides have produced 30 goals, five per game on average, with City scoring 22.
