Darmian, who was part of the Italy squad at the 2014 World Cup, is a versatile player who is happy using either foot and playing on either side of the defence, making him an ideal player for van Gaal and his desire to use fluid and flexible tactical set-ups.

With Torino already having sold key forwards Ciro Immobile and Alessio Cerci this summer, however, they will be determined to keep hold of Darmian, who is now their star player, with the report suggesting that the Serie A outfit will be demanding a fee in the region of £15 million for the player.

Right back certainly looks like an area that United need to improve, with Brazilian Rafael da Silva never quite having established himself as undisputed first choice, although van Gaal does not yet seem totally convinced by the prospects of teenager Luke Shaw on the opposite flank either.

This uncertainty would make Darmian the ideal signing, with the Italian capable of covering both flanks effectively and adding another piece to van Gaal’s jigsaw as United look to make it back into the Champions League.
