The rock-solid defender has been a key performer for Diego Simeone’s side in recent times, putting in some outstanding defensive displays for the club as they won La Liga and reached the Champions League final last season.

This has seen several top clubs stand up and take notice of the impressive 30-year-old, who could be a useful addition at Stamford Bridge as Jose Mourinho looks somewhat short of depth at the back.

With John Terry and Gary Cahill currently the first choice centre-back pairing, only youngster Kurt Zouma is available as a backup, and Miranda’s arrival could see the ageing Terry afforded more rest.

It is thought that this signing will cost around £22m, though Atletico will no doubt be desperate to keep hold of one of their star players after losing so many big names to Chelsea this summer, with Diego Costa and Filipe Luis moving to Stamford Bridge and Thibaut Courtois returning to the club after three years on loan at the Vicente Calderon.
