Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has ruled out a move for reported transfer target Victor Valdes. The former Barcelona goalkeeper has been a free agent since leaving the Spanish giants at the end of last season.

Reports in the Daily Mirror confirm that the Reds, who are seeking competition for current first choice stopper Simon Mignolet, have cooled their interest in the 32-year-old veteran, who won 23 major honours during his time in La Liga.

The Kop boss simply answered “no” when asked if any Spanish players would be arriving at the club in the next few months – a clear reference to the speculation over Valdes. The Reds boss, who was speaking to Spanish sports daily AS, would not be drawn on the recent rumours.

Valdes came close to joining French side Monaco last summer, but the move collapsed over injury concerns. Reports later suggested that Liverpool were set to ask the Spanish international to undergo a trial period at the club, a request that is thought to have been rejected.

Figures inside Anfield have become increasingly unconvinced by Belgian keeper Mignolet, a £9.5m signing from Sunderland in 2013, and the Reds are still likely to chase a new signing in January.
