The 29 year old Portuguese international, who has netted an astounding 17 goals in 12 appearances this season, moved to the Bernabeu in 2009 for a then world record £80m fee.

The agreement has apparently been made at the house of former Man United assistant Carlos Quieroz, a point he himself has confirmed.

“Look, for example, the decision to open Manchester United’s doors for him to go to Real Madrid was taken in my house, amid my family,” he said.

“When doubts arose, I managed to bring Alex Ferguson and Cristiano together at my house.

“With the three of us sat down, it was decided that Cristiano would stay another year at United and leave the following year for Real.”

Ronaldo is back in England as his Real Madrid side prepare to take on Liverpool at Anfield on Wednesday night.

Man United won the Premier League title in the ‘extra’ season they had Ronaldo on board, as well as reaching the Champions League final, the Real Madrid star netting 26 goals in all competitions in 2008/09.
