Ferdinand, who will turn 36 next month, was dropped for Sunday’s defeat to Liverpool after failing to impress since his arrival on a free in the summer.

He was signed over the summer by manager Harry Redknapp despite some serious opposition from within the club after he was released by Manchester United.

And it is believed that those who were opposed to his £35,000-per-week deal now feel vindicated in their sentiments and will now likely push for an early termination of his contract in the new year.

He has impressed coaches with his work ethic and experience around the training ground, but many feel the club should have instead moved for a younger player as they look to avoid an instantaneous return to the Championship having only coming up last term.
