Reports in the Daily Mail explain that the winger had treatment on thigh injury on Wednesday, following Monday night’s 2-2 draw, and is optimistic of facing the league leaders on Sunday.

Di Maria was at Carrington for treatment on his day off, with manager Louis van Gaal desperate to have his star player at his disposal for a potentially season-defining fixture.

There has been no official word on his fitness from the club but the former Real Madrid star, but he has undergone some light remedial work, and sources inside the club have suggested he has a decent chance of making the game.

“It was just a kick,” said one Old Trafford representative. Elsewhere, United are definitely without captain Wayne Rooney who is serving the final game of a three-match suspension after he was sent off against West Ham.

The source adds that Chelsea look set to travel to Manchester without their top scorer Diego Costa and his replacement Loic Remy, who are both injured.
