Rodgers was speaking the day after his side comprehensively lost 3-0 to Real Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Balotelli’s poor performance was one of the biggest disappointments for the Merseyside club and his half-time shirt swap with Madrid defender Pepe was unpopular with the many connected to the club.

“I think the boy is trying very, very hard and long-term we will see how that works out for him,” Rodgers was quoted by the Mirror.

“He is working hard to improve to score goals and boost his chances. As long as he is doing his best, I can’t ask for anymore.

“Whether that best is good enough long-term who knows. But that’s the same for any player.

The Liverpool boss gave short shrift to questions on the shirt swap, only saying, “We’ve had a conversation. Case closed.”

This will be worrying hearing for the Italian striker, who only arrived at the club in the summer for £16 million.

At the time of his transfer Rodgers described it as Balotelli’s last chance at a big club. It would sound like he has not taken that chance yet.
