Valdes has been a free agent since his contract at the Nou Camp expired over the summer, but has been recovering from a cruciate ligament injury and as yet has not found another club to sign for.

The Reds had been keeping tabs on the 32-year-old as concerns over the capabilities of current No.1 Simon Mignolet grows and the ex-Barca man looked like the ideal alternative.

However, since meeting with Valdes’ representatives and going over scans of the stopper’s knee problem, the Merseyside club have decided not to take things further and have walked away from the deal.

Meanwhile United manager Louis van Gaal decided to give the Spain international the opportunity to train with his squad to help the rehabilitation process after suffering his injury back in March.

Van Gaal knows Valdes well having given the ‘keeper his debut for the Catalans back in 2002, but the Red Devils have given no indication as to whether they want to sign him permanently or not.

The 13-time Premier League winners are in less need of a new man between the sticks as their great rivals, as David de Gea has been considered one of the best players at Old Trafford over the past couple of years.
