The former Tottenham man is currently sidelined with a hip injury, but his form in his debut season as well as a solid start to the new campaign suggested that he would come straight back into the team following his recovery.

Carlo Ancelotti has been experimenting with a different formation in his absence however, and the form of Isco as well as the new found defensive stability that a four man midfield brings could make things difficult for the Bale.

The Welshman has also recently been criticised by Spanish publication Marca for his poor work-rate and fitness levels. He has appeared unwilling to track back and doesn’t cover nearly as much ground as players like Isco and James Rodriguez.

So far his goals and attacking play have kept him in the team, but if they can replace them without sacrificing in defence then Bale may struggle to regain his place.
