Gourlay brought an end to his five year spell at the Stamford Bridge last week and whilst Purslow is not a direct replacement for the Blues supremo he will form part of a management team alongside chairman Bruce Buck and director Marina Granovskaia.

The 50 year old will be entrusted with the task of expanding the Chelsea brand around the world with the Blues releasing the following brief statement on the appointment.

“The club believes Mr Purslow has the vision and the leadership qualities to help us achieve these plans,”

Purslow succeeded Rick Parry at Anfield in June 2009 before leaving the Merseyside outfit in February 2011.
