Former Leeds United manager, Darko Milanic, who was supposedly sacked at the weekend following just his sixth game in charge, has claimed that he is in fact still under contract at the Championship club.

Reports in the Daily Star carry quotes from the Slovenian, who most recently saw his side lose 2-1 to Wolves, leaving them in 18th place in the table, five points clear of the relegation zone.

Milanic drew three and lost three of his half-dozen games in charge since replacing Dave Hockaday in the top job. Yet despite his apparent axing, the 46-year-old revealed he’s still being paid by the club.

“I still have a contract, I’m only on paid leave,” he told reporters, “this means that the contract has not yet been terminated. During this time, the coach must be ever ready to once again take over the team, if requested by the owner.

“My contract continues to run and I’m going to spend the next few days on vacation. My contract binds me to Leeds for nearly two years, and will not be stopped.”

Neil Redfearn is being lined up as a permanent successor to Milanic, after a caretaker spell in the job earlier this season, and his predecessor reckons the Yorkshireman will inherit an improving side, if owner Massimo Cellino decides to give him a chance.

“In six games with the team, I made ??a big step forward,” he added. “It is true that we have had bad results, and we should have won more points. But the situation was improving.”
