The 27 year old has come in for a fair bit of criticism over the past year and has found himself the subject of a great deal of interest with Nou Camp boss Luis Enrique perhaps open to offers for the defender.

Having brought in Jeremy Mathieu and Thomas Vermaelen over the summer Pique will find himself in the unusual position of having to fight for his spot in the Barcelona starting eleven and has indeed found himself warming the bench on occasion this term.

Mourinho may see Pique as a natural replacement for veteran John Terry but then the Blues manager does have a fair few other centre-back options, not least youngster Kurt Zouma who was brought in from Saint-Etienne in January.

Pique is valued at £30m by this source and that’s a hefty fee for a player who is not at the top of his game though clearly the experienced Spaniard is a proven talent.

Gerard Pique started his career at Barcelona before spending four years at Man United before returning to his hometown club with whom he has won four La Liga titles and two Champions League winners medals, making 274 appearances in the process.
