Manchester United sent assistant manager Ryan Giggs on a scouting assignment to Belgium last week, report the Daily Star, with the Welshman having headed a delegation sent to Lokeren to watch Trabzonspor forward Abdul Majeed Waris play in a Europe League tie.

Waris only signed for Trabzonspor, who won the game 2-0, in the summer, but he has hit the ground running in Turkish football, attracting the attention of United who are believed to be tracking Waris ahead of a possible future deal as Louis van Gaal looks to really stamp his mark on the squad.

Waris has taken a nomadic route to Trabzon on the North coast of Turkey, having joined in the summer from Spartak Moscow having never really settled in Russia, with his performances on loan at Valenciennes in Ligue 1 last season having attracted the attention of Trabzonspor.

It was with Hacken in Sweden where he really made his name, however, with his goalscoring exploits in Scandinavia persuading Spartak to splash out on bringing Waris to the Russian capital.

Despite having Wayne Rooney, Radamel Falcao and Robin van Persie on their books, United perhaps lack a young, up and coming and, crucially, fast striker after selling Danny Welbeck to Arsenal this summer, which could explain the interest in Waris.
