Brazilian Rafael is said to be keen on signing a new deal with the Old Trafford side but van Gaal is unconvinced by the 24 year old and Chris Smalling hasn’t been all that convincing when used in the role, so a move for Uchida is a sensible and presumably inexpensive option to consider.

New Schalke boss Roberto di Matteo is looking to tie down Uchida to a new long term deal with the Gelsenkirchen side but interest from Man United may well be something of an obstacle in that regard.

Former Kashima Antlers star Uchida has been a consistent performer over the past four seasons, making 133 appearances for Schalke, and has the top tier experience that van Gaal may be looking for as he seeks to strengthen his defence.
