The Premier League champions have been keen to bring in a new signing in that part of the pitch in recent times after it has become apparent that Yaya Toure is suffering a major dip in form after his heroics last season.

The Ivory Coast international has had some personal problems in recent months and was thought to be looking for an exit from the Etihad Stadium in the summer, though he has remained with the team for now.

Still, City could do with strengthening in the middle of the park and manager Manuel Pellegrini is seemingly keen on the in-form Herrera as a player who could come in and fill that role in his side.

The 24-year-old has been a superb performer for club and country in recent times, and could join former team-mates Fernando and Eliaquim Mangala at City, after the pair both left Porto for moves to England this summer.

An all-action midfield player, Herrera has four goals in 35 appearances for the Portuguese giants since joining them last season.
