The Dutch international may be about to renew his contract with the Bundesliga club, though he is currently free to leave the club for nothing at the end of this season as he attracts plenty of interest from abroad.

Liverpool and Spurs are among his main admirers after his superb goalscoring exploits in the German top flight, as well as with the Netherlands at international level.

Both teams could do with strengthening upfront based on performances so far this season, with Tottenham relying on the goal-shy pairing of Roberto Soldado and Emmanuel Adebayor, while Liverpool’s summer signing Mario Balotelli has badly struggled to settle in at Anfield after being brought in to replace the departing Luis Suarez.

Huntelaar has shown an eye for goal wherever he has played, and Schalke will no doubt be desperate to tie him down to a new deal in the coming months as top clubs circle.

The 31-year-old would be free to negotiate a move for next season from January onwards, and may be open to trying a new challenge.
