The Belgian international only joined the Catalan giants from Arsenal this summer, but his fitness problems have proved some concern for manager Luis Enrique, who wants to loan him out to help get him back to fitness.

The Spanish tactician does not yet consider the former Gunners captain ready to become a regular in his side, despite the team looking short of quality defensive options due to some poor recent form from Gerard Pique.

This is certainly a low point in the career of Vermaelen, who initially looked a superb player for Arsenal before suffering a drastic dip in form in his last two years at the Emirates Stadium.

Still, the 28-year-old earned himself a move to Barcelona this season and will have hoped to gain the chance to rediscover his best form, though he is yet to make a single appearance for his new club.

It has now emerged that Barca will consider loan offers for the player, in a surprise turn of events ahead of the January transfer window.
