The Merseyside club are just six points off the relegation zone, while league leaders Chelsea are currently 12 points ahead of Rodgers’ side after ten games.

The Reds are also struggling badly in the Champions League following their first season back among Europe’s elite in a long time. Currently behind European minnows Ludogorets on three points, qualification looks far from certain in a group they were expected to easily make it out of.

Nicol believes Brendan Rodgers has to be held accountable for Liverpool’s current form, with his poor tactics and failings in the transfer market the main areas of criticism.

“To say they’ve been a disappointment is an understatement,” Nicol said.

“[This season] has been an absolute disaster. There is only one man missing from the squad they had last year and that’s Luis Suarez, everybody else is still there.

“Something has gone wrong somewhere down the line. All this teamwork and all this chemistry they had last year has disappeared.

“The biggest question isn;t about Brendan’s tactics, which are questionable. The biggest question is actually, who is making the decisions on the signings?

“When you finish second in the Premier League and you have the amount of money Liverpool had to spend and you don’t spend it wisely that is the question I would be asking. Who signed these guys?”

Mario Balotelli has particularly come under fire, with the controversial Italian striker failing to score in the Premier League despite plenty of opportunities.

Liverpool continued their woeful start to the season with a disappointing performance culminating in a 1-0 loss against a struggling Newcastle side.
