Liverpool travel to Real Madrid for a Champions League tie on Tuesday evening, with the Reds looking to avenge their 3-0 defeat at home to the reigning champions a fortnight ago despite their league form remaining indifferent at best during the intervening period.
Once Cristiano Ronaldo had put Real in front at Anfield a fortnight ago the result seemed to be a formality and only the fact that Carlo Ancelotti’s side had an El Clasico against Barcelona looming large meant that they took their foot off the gas in the second half.
Brendan Rodgers’ side were beaten 1-0 by Newcastle United in another insipid Premier League performance on Saturday and will know that they have to improve, although Daniel Sturridge’s lack of fitness means that Rodgers will once again be relying on a combination of Mario Balotelli, Fabio Borini and Rickie Lambert.
For hosts Madrid, things look much more rosy, with a 4-0 win over Granada at the weekend, coupled with Barca’s shock defeat at home to Celta Vigo, putting them above their arch rivals in the La Liga table.
