Both Louis van Gaal and Manuel Pellegrini are keen to land the adaptable 20 year old, who can play at left back or in the centre of the defence, but one imagines that Man United may stand a better chance of securing a deal for the Dutch international given the presence of his former national team coach at Old Trafford.

Man City’s case may be aided by the presence of Terence’s younger brother Rodney at the club’s academy.

Van Gaal’s defence has been decidedly shaky this term with Phil Jones suffering with injury concerns, Jonny Evans lurching from one poor display to the next which has led to youngsters Tyler Blackett and Paddy McNair being thrown in at the deep end at times, with varying degrees of success.

Terence Kongolo is already into his fourth season in the Feyenoord first team set-up and is clearly a player van Gaal rates highly and one imagines he’d be keen to team up with national team colleagues Daley Blind and Robin Van Persie at Man United.

City’s need for fresh defensive options is seemingly far less desperate than that of their near neighbours.
