United lost 1-0 at rivals Manchester City on Sunday, leaving them with just 13 points from their first 10 Premier League games.

The Red Devils are only above West Bromwich Albion and Newcastle United on goal difference.

Savage, who left United in 1994 without playing a single senior game for the club, is far from impressed with Van Gaal’s start as Old Trafford chief.

Ranting on BBC Radio 5Live, Savage said: “Manchester United are level on points with West Brom.

“Don’t get me wrong, I think Alan Irvine is doing a great job there, but United have spent £150m on new players and that is unacceptable.

“When are we going to start asking serious questions of Louis van Gaal in press conferences?”

United were dumped out of the League Cup by a 4-0 defeat to MK Dons back in August.
