The England international could follow his former national side colleague Ashley Cole in swapping the Premier League for Serie A, becoming another rare example of a British-based player moving abroad.

Johnson seems likely to be leaving Liverpool at the end of this season, with the out-of-form full-back no longer guaranteed first choice in Brendan Rodgers’ side and in the final year of his contract with the club.

The 30-year-old first joined the Reds from Portsmouth back in 2009 and has been a key player for the club, but now looks somewhat past his best as he considers calling time on his career on Merseyside.

Inter are monitoring his situation, according to rumours emerging from Italy, and they may now be the favourites to snap him up if he does become available in next summer’s transfer window.

Meanwhile, Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard is also looking set for a move abroad on a free next summer, with New York Cosmos monitoring his situation as his future also looks uncertain with the club he’s been with for his whole career.
