The Argentine defender had to be carried off and given oxygen during United’s devastating 1-0 loss against arch rivals Manchester City on Sunday.

This is just the latest in a long line of defensive injuries for Louis van Gaal’s side, with Phil Jones and Jonny Evans already sidelined and Chris Smalling banned following his red card against the Premier League champions.

The Dutch manager’s diagnoses didn’t initially give the impression that the injury was that bad, with the former Barcelona boss merely stating that Rojo would miss the Red Devils’ next game against Crystal Palace.

It now seems the injury is worse than originally feared however, and Rojo could be out until Christmas.

United will once again have to rely on youngsters Paddy McNair and Tyler Blackett, although the return of Michael Carrick has at least given van Gaal one more option at the back.
